AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2023

Friday October 6: The string quartet Opus13 invite the pianist Håvard Gimse to perform Johannes Brahms’ fantastic Piano Quintet in f-minor, opus 34. In the first half of the concert Opus13 play String Quartet opus 76, no. 2 by Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge opus 133.

Opus13 did remarkedly well in the Banff International String Quartet Competition 2022 – which opened up for their international career. They also got Equinor Classical Music Scholarship – an award that earlier on was granted the primarius of the quartet, Sonoko Miriam Welde. Håvard Gimse is one of our finest pianists who have won a number of prizes – both nationally and internationally.

Saturday October 7: Håkon Kornstad – an internationally acclaimed jazz saxophone player and classical singer with a Master from the Academy of Opera in Oslo – joins the pianist Ingrid Andsnes – a reconized musician at home and abroad – for the concert Kornstad and Andsnes. They invite us to a lovely meditative concert called “I stilla” – based on the music of the Spanish composer Federico Mompou. Here they open up a completely new musical landscape with the sounds of classical music and jazz. Mompou’s music is inspired by the French impressionists and invites the musicians to improvisations. That’s actually when they are really at theirs’s best!

Sunday October 8: Opus13 present music by Leos Janacek and Caroline Shaw in the first half of the concert. New composers and music to many of us – but even more tempting! Janacek’s String Quartet no. 1, Kreutzer Sonata, leads our mind to the Beethoven piece that was played on the first day of the festival. Caroline Shaw was «Inaugural music fellow» at Dumbarton Oaks – the fantastic property outside Washington. She composed Plan & Elevation inspired by her favorite places in the garden there – as The Beech Tree, The Herbaceous Border, The Orangery….

To end the festival Opus13 have invited the cellist Amalie Stalheim to join them in one of the most beautiful chamber music works – Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 956.

One fantastic weekend with music by Janacek, Shaw, Mompou – and Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms performed by the very finest musicians!

Just breathtaking – and not to be missed!
